VetStix 11SG are eleven-parameter urinalysis reagent strips designed specifically for veterinary practices and laboratories, rather than repurposed from human medicine. That distinction matters, because several of the differences are aimed directly at the way dog and cat urine behaves.

Specific gravity reads reliably to 1.070 rather than 1.060, which is the range where renal concentrating ability in dogs and cats is actually assessed. The glucose chemistry pads stay stable for the full 30-month shelf life, so a high reading indicating diabetes will not be missed on an older strip. The pH pad is positioned two pads away from the highly acidic protein pad, which prevents runoff between pads from producing a falsely reduced pH.

The strips also detect ascorbic acid, which is worth having. Vitamin C in urine, common in supplemented animals, can produce falsely low or false negative glucose results at levels as low as 25 mg/dL, and can also skew bilirubin, nitrite, blood, leukocyte, and urobilinogen readings. Knowing ascorbate is present tells you when to question the rest of the panel.

Shelf life is 30 months rather than the usual 24.

How to Use

Follow the package insert for procedure and read times. Collect a fresh sample and test promptly, since urine composition changes as it sits. Dip the strip briefly, draw the edge along the rim of the container to remove excess, and read each pad at its specified time against the color chart on the bottle.

Recap the bottle immediately after removing a strip. The pads are moisture sensitive, and an open or poorly sealed bottle is the most common cause of unreliable results. Keep the desiccant in the bottle, store as directed, and do not use strips past the expiration date.
