Spectam (Spectinomycin) Water-Soluble Concentrate for Growing Chickens

For growing chickens. Prescription required.

Product Description

Spectam is a water-soluble spectinomycin concentrate for growing chickens, administered through the drinking water.

It is indicated as an aid in the prevention or control of losses due to chronic respiratory disease associated with Mycoplasma gallisepticum, and as an aid in controlling infectious synovitis caused by Mycoplasma synoviae in broiler chickens. It is also indicated for increased rate of weight gain and improved feed efficiency in floor-raised broiler chickens.

Every 1000 grams contains 500 grams of spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate, equivalent to spectinomycin activity.

Water administration is the practical route in poultry, since birds that are unwell often stop eating before they stop drinking, and medicating the water reaches the whole house at once.

Active Ingredient

Spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate, 500 grams per 1000 grams

Indications

Aid in the prevention or control of losses due to chronic respiratory disease associated with Mycoplasma gallisepticum
Aid in controlling infectious synovitis due to Mycoplasma synoviae in broiler chickens
Increased rate of weight gain and improved feed efficiency in floor-raised broiler chickens

How to Use

Mix in drinking water at the rate specified on the label, following your veterinarian’s direction.

Prepare medicated water fresh according to the label, and make it the only source of water available during the treatment period. Birds drinking from an unmedicated source will not receive a therapeutic dose.

Check that waterers are working and accessible throughout the house, since uneven access produces uneven dosing.

Important Restrictions

Do not administer to laying chickens.

Observe the withdrawal period stated on the label before slaughter. Residue violations are traceable to the producer.

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Important Safety Information

For use in growing chickens only. Use exactly as prescribed and for the duration prescribed. Stopping early contributes to treatment failure and resistance.

Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label.

Talk to your veterinarian

Medically important antibiotics in food-producing animals require veterinary oversight, which is why this carries a prescription requirement. A veterinary client-patient relationship is needed, and your veterinarian will determine whether spectinomycin is appropriate for what is happening in your flock.

Respiratory disease in poultry has several causes, bacterial, mycoplasmal, and viral among them, and they are managed differently. Diagnostics matter here, because treating the wrong thing costs birds and time. Mycoplasma in particular is a flock-level problem with biosecurity and replacement-source implications beyond the current treatment.
