Sileo (Dexmedetomidine Oromucosal Gel) for Dogs
For dogs. Prescription required.
Product Description
Sileo is the only FDA-approved treatment for noise aversion in dogs. It's a dexmedetomidine gel applied between the cheek and gum, where it is absorbed through the oral mucosa rather than being swallowed.
Noise aversion is more than a dog being briefly startled. Thunderstorms, fireworks, and construction send genuinely affected dogs into panic, and they pant, pace, tremble, hide, drool, destroy doors and crates, and sometimes injure themselves trying to escape. It also tends to worsen over a dog's life rather than fade.
What makes Sileo different from a sedative is that it calms without sedating. Dogs stay alert and able to interact with the family rather than being knocked out, which matters because being able to respond normally during the event is part of how a dog learns it isn't a catastrophe.
It works quickly, usually within about thirty to sixty minutes, so it suits both predictable events like a fireworks display and less predictable ones like a storm rolling in.

How to Use
Give exactly as prescribed. Dosing is by weight and is set using the ring stops on the syringe, so read the instructions carefully and set the dose before administering. The syringe holds multiple doses.
Apply the gel between the cheek and the gum. It must absorb through the oral mucosa, so do not put it on food, in water, or down the throat, and do not let your dog eat or drink for at least fifteen minutes afterward. Swallowing the gel significantly reduces how well it works.
Wear disposable gloves when handling it, and wash your hands afterward.
Timing matters. Give the dose when your dog first shows signs of anxiety or just before an expected noise event, not after the panic has set in. If the event continues, the dose can be repeated as directed on the label, up to the stated maximum in a 24 hour period.
Important Safety Information
Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. For use in dogs only.
Do not use in dogs with severe cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, liver or kidney disease, or in dogs in shock, severe debilitation, or stress from extreme heat, cold, or fatigue.
Safe use has not been evaluated in dogs younger than the labeled minimum age, or in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.
Transient pale gums at the application site are expected. Contact your veterinarian if your dog becomes markedly sedated, develops vomiting, or seems unwell after a dose.
Handle with care. Dexmedetomidine is absorbed through human mucous membranes and skin, so gloves are not optional, and people with cardiovascular disease should take particular care. Seek medical attention if a person is accidentally exposed or ingests the product.
Keep out of reach of children. Replace the cap and store the syringe as directed between uses. Note the expiration period after first opening.

Talk to your veterinarian
Noise aversion generally responds best to medication combined with behavior work: a safe space the dog chooses, desensitization between events, and management of exposure. Your veterinarian can build that plan alongside the prescription.
