Product Description

Rx Renal Canine is a capsule formula for dogs with reduced kidney function, combining Western nutraceuticals with a traditional Chinese herbal base.

The formula works along several lines at once. N-acetylcysteine and milk thistle address oxidative stress, which is one of the mechanisms by which kidney damage progresses. L-arginine is the precursor to nitric oxide and relates to renal blood flow. Rehmannia, rhubarb root, astragalus and dong quai form the traditional kidney support base that this formula is built around, and the inclusion of melatonin reflects research interest in its role in renal protection.

It is worth being clear about what a supplement in this category can and cannot do. Chronic kidney disease is not reversible. The goal of everything in the protocol, diet, phosphate binders, blood pressure control and supplements like this one, is to slow progression and keep the dog feeling well for longer. This sits alongside those, not in place of them.

Capsules can be given whole or opened and mixed into food.

• Green tea extract (standardized to 55 to 60% EGCG), 25 mg
• Hawthorn berry extract
• Melatonin, 1 mg

How to Use

The label directs one capsule per 25 lbs of body weight, twice daily.

Give it consistently rather than intermittently. Everything in kidney management works by slowing a gradual process, which means daily use over months is what produces the benefit.

Open the capsule onto food if your dog will not take it whole.

Tell your veterinarian your dog is on this, particularly if there is any surgery planned. Ginkgo and dong quai are both associated with effects on clotting, and a formula with this many botanicals is worth having on the record alongside any prescription medication.
