Product Description

Modulis is a cyclosporine oral solution from Ceva, indicated for the control of atopic dermatitis in dogs weighing at least 4 lbs.

Cyclosporine works differently from the newer itch medications. Rather than blocking the itch signal, it modulates the immune response driving the allergic reaction, which makes it a longer-term management drug rather than a fast-acting one. Relief builds over weeks, and many dogs can eventually be tapered to every other day or twice weekly dosing once the condition is controlled.

The liquid format is the practical advantage for small dogs and for dogs who won't take capsules. Dosing is by weight with a syringe, which allows precision a fixed-size capsule can't, and lets the dose be adjusted as the taper progresses.

How to Use

Give exactly as prescribed, measured with the syringe provided.

Expect it to take time. Cyclosporine typically needs four to eight weeks before its full effect is apparent. Don't judge it after a week, and don't stop early because nothing has changed yet.

Your veterinarian will usually start with daily dosing and then taper to the lowest effective frequency once the itching is controlled. Follow that schedule rather than adjusting on your own.

Give the dose at least an hour before or two hours after a meal unless your veterinarian directs otherwise, since food affects absorption. Keeping the timing consistent day to day matters more than which time you choose.

Wash your hands after handling. Do not let the syringe tip touch anything that could contaminate the bottle, and recap it after each use.

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. For use in dogs only. Not for use in cats or humans.

Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant. It may increase susceptibility to infection and may worsen pre-existing infections or neoplasia. Dogs should be free from serious infection before starting.

Do not use in dogs with a history of malignant neoplasia. Use with caution in dogs with diabetes mellitus or renal insufficiency. Safe use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been established.

Tell your veterinarian about all other medications your dog receives. Cyclosporine has a long list of clinically relevant drug interactions, including ketoconazole and other azole antifungals, certain antibiotics, and other immunosuppressants. Live vaccines should not be given during treatment or for a period afterward, so raise the vaccination schedule with your veterinarian before starting.

Vomiting and diarrhea are the most common effects and often ease over the first weeks. Contact your veterinarian if they persist, or if your dog develops gum overgrowth, unusual hair coat changes, lethargy, loss of appetite, signs of infection, or any new lump.

Your veterinarian may want periodic bloodwork during long-term treatment.
