Felanorm (Methimazole) Oral Solution for Cats
For cats. Prescription required.
Product Description
Felanorm is a methimazole oral solution from Virbac, indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats.
Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common endocrine conditions in older cats. An overactive thyroid drives the metabolism too hard, and the classic picture is a cat eating well, sometimes ravenously, while steadily losing weight, often with increased thirst, restlessness, a poor, unkempt coat, vomiting, or a change in voice. Untreated, it damages the heart and kidneys over time.
Methimazole works by reducing thyroid hormone production. It manages the condition rather than curing it, so most cats stay on it for life unless the owner pursues radioactive iodine or surgery.
The liquid format is the reason this product exists. Hyperthyroid cats are usually older, often thin and difficult to handle, and need medication once or twice daily indefinitely. A syringe of flavored liquid is considerably more sustainable over years than a daily pill, and it allows precise dose adjustment as bloodwork dictates.

How to Use
Give exactly as prescribed, measured with the syringe provided. Shake if the label directs.
Give at the same times each day. Consistency matters with thyroid medication, since the dose is titrated against bloodwork.
Your veterinarian will want to recheck bloodwork, typically a few weeks after starting and then periodically, to check thyroid levels along with kidney values and a blood count. Keep those appointments even when your cat seems well. The dose almost always needs adjusting, and the monitoring is how it gets right.
Do not stop or change the dose on your own. If a dose is missed, give it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next one, and do not double up.
Wash your hands after handling, and avoid skin contact with the solution.
Important Safety Information
Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. For use in cats only.
Pregnant women should avoid handling this medication, since methimazole can affect a developing fetus. Wear gloves if that applies to anyone in the household.
Treating hyperthyroidism can unmask underlying kidney disease. An overactive thyroid artificially increases blood flow through the kidneys, so bringing thyroid levels down can reveal kidney impairment that was already present but hidden. This is expected and manageable, and it is one of the main reasons your veterinarian monitors kidney values alongside thyroid levels.
Contact your veterinarian if your cat develops vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, facial itching or scratching, jaundice, unusual bruising or bleeding, or seems unwell on treatment. Serious reactions are uncommon but real, and most show up in the first few months.
Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. See the full package insert for complete prescribing information.
