Warnings
Pet owners should discontinue therapy and contact their veterinarian immediately if side effects occur.
Evaluation for pre existing conditions and regulatory monitoring are recommended for pets on any medication, including PREVICOX.
Use with other NSAIDs, corticosteroids or nephrotoxic medication should be avoided.
If changing NSAIDs due to lack of efficacy, consider a washout period between agents.
For the safety of your animal, periodic blood test are recommended.
Precautions
PREVICOX should not be used in animals with hypersensitivity to it or other NSAIDs.
The drug should be used with caution and enhanced monitoring performed in patients with pre-existing renal, hepatic, or cardiovascular disfunction.
PREVICOX should not be used in dogs that weigh less than 12.5lbs (5.7kg) as the tablets cannot be accurately dosed for these animals. Compounded forms of this drug are available.
Food and Drug Interactions
The following drug interactions have either been reported or are theoretical in animals receiving PREVICOX and may be of significance in veterinary patients. Unless otherwise noted, use together is not necessarily contraindicated, but weigh the potential risks and perform additional monitoring when appropriate.
- ACE INHIBITORS - Some NSAIDs can reduce the effect on blood pressure.
- ASPIRIN - May increase the risks for GI toxicity.
- CORTICOSTEROIDS - May increase the risks for GI toxicity.
- DIGOXIN - NSAIDs may increase serum levels.
- FLUCONAZOLE - Administration has increased plasma levels of celecoxib in humans and potentially could also effect PREVICOX in dogs.
- FUROSEMIDE - NSAIDs may reduce the saluretic and diuretic effects.
- HIGHLY PROTEIN BOUND DRUGS - Because PREVICOX is highly bound to plasma proteins (greater than 95%), it could theoretically displace other highly bound drugs; a temporary increase in serum levels may occure. These interactions have not been shown to be of clinical concern.
- METHOTREXATE - Serious toxicity has occurred when NSAIDs have been used concomitantly with methotrexate; use together with extreme caution.
- NEPHROTOXIC DRUGS - May inhance the risk for nephrotoxicity development.
- NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS - May increase the risks for GI toxicity.
