Description

Gabapentin (gab·​a·​pen·​tin) is prescribed for the management of seizures, pain, and anxiety. Although not FDA-approved for veterinary use, Gabapentin is regularly prescribed for use in dogs.

Warnings

Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS), also known as multiorgan hypersensitivity, has occurred with gabapentin. Some of these reactions have been fatal or life-threatening.

Precautions

Respiratory Depression: May occur with gabapentin when used with concomitant central nervous system (CNS) depressants, including opioids, or in the setting of underlying respiratory impairment. Monitor patients and adjust dosage as appropriate

Food and Drug Interactions

Respiratory depression and sedation, sometimes resulting in death, have been reported following co-administration of gabapentin with opioids

Human Warnings

Keep this and all medication out of the reach of children.

 



Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects of this medication is sleepiness and lack of coordination. Side effects will subside with longer use of this medication.

Contact your veterinarian if you believe your pet is experiencing side effects.
