Protazil is a prescription, alfalfa-based top-dress pellet indicated for the treatment of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) caused by Sarcocystis neurona in horses. It was the first FDA-approved alfalfa-based pelleted formulation containing diclazuril, an antiprotozoal compound active against organisms in the phylum Apicomplexa. Because it's fed as a top-dress in the horse's daily grain ration rather than administered as a paste or oral suspension, Protazil makes a 28-day treatment course simpler to manage — no syringes, no dosing gun, no fight at feeding time.

Dosing
The labeled dose is 1 mg diclazuril per kg (0.45 mg/lb) of body weight, fed once daily for 28 consecutive days. That works out to 64 mg of pellets per kg (29 mg pellets/lb) of body weight. Weigh the horse or use a weight tape, then fill the scoop to the cup mark that corresponds to your horse's weight per the dosing chart on the label.
