Spironolactone (speer-on-oh-lak-tone) is a diuretic that works in the kidneys to remove excess fluid and salt from the body. This medication is used in combination with other drugs to treat heart failure and relieve extra pressure on the heart; it may also have some protective effects on the heart muscle.
