Veterinarians may prescribe clopidogrel to prevent formation of blood clots, particularly in animals that have already had blood clots. The FDA (U.S. Food& Drug Administration) has approved this drug for use in humans, but it is not officially approved for use in animals. The FDA allows veterinarians to prescribe products containing this drug in different species or for other conditions in certain situations. You and your veterinarian can discuss why this drug is the most appropriate choice.

Clopidogrel should not be used in animals that have had an allergic reaction to it, or that a bleeding problem.


If your animal is pregnant or nursing, talk to your veterinarian about the risks of using this drug.

Food and Drug Interactions

Clopidogrel may be given with or without food. If your animal vomits or acts sick after receiving the drug on an empty stomach, try giving the next dose with food or a small treat. If vomiting continues, contact your veterinarian.

Other drugs can interact with clopidogrel, so be sure to tell your veterinarian andpharmacist what medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) you give your animal, including the amount andtime you give each.

Possible Side Effects

Minor side effects include vomiting and reduced appetite.

Clopidogrel increases the risk of bleeding. Excessive bleeding usually does not occur with clopidogrel, but it is possible. Do not allow your pet to be in situations in which it might be injured or cut. If you see bruising, bloody vomit (looks like coffee grounds), or black, tarry stools, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Contact your veterinarian if you believe your pet is experiencing side effects.
